Many Vateliens spontaneously contact Vatel Group schools to recruit their interns and employees. This loyalty towards the school that trained them has also led several, such as Kevin Tessieux, to come back to the place where they learned the tricks of the trade, to in turn, share them with tomorrow’s professionals.
His career illustrates the way that shifting can be natural and logical. Today Kevin splits his time between marketing for a wine estate, managing a Hard Rock Cafe in France and consulting for a cabinet that is specialized in quality in the hospitality industry. He’s the one who gave the first sustainable development course, in the 5th year, at Vatel Lyon and Vatel Nimes. As a student, he devoted his final internship to promoting an ecolabel, in a three-star hotel in the west of France, whose only goal was to promote the local economic development.
The pioneer of this program in 2010, his courses insist on concrete management and innovation actions, such as managing employees with the goals of motivation and continuous perfection, putting in place tools to monitor water and energy consumption, support in labelling paperwork, etc. He also teaches courses on quality and monitoring clients, which complements his primary specialty.
“I build my teaching approaches to these subjects just like I would have liked to have been taught,” he explains.
“Two hours of theory, because you have to understand the fundamentals, and then four hours of operational work, with examples that I take from my own experience, not just in the hospitality industry, but from all over, every time I find some good ideas. I make sure that students think upstream and use their questions to continuously adapt the content of my courses to changes in real life. I also try to link three disciplines together: sustainable development, quality and marketing, as they are transversal subjects and irrigate all departments in a hotel.”
